The principal hiring bill needs your help

HB 239
(Stevens), is now the principal selection bill, after in the Senate Education Committee the original bill (HB 322) was attached to HB 239, a bill to make the last Wednesday in August Kentucky Literacy Day for public schools. This bill would allow a superintendent to be a part of the process of selecting a school principal in collaboration with a school council. Since superintendents are held accountable for the success or failure of each school – just like managers are held accountable for their employees' performance in the business world – it is only logical and in the best interest of students for superintendents to have a say in the leadership of those schools. The bill passed out of the Senate Education Committee and the full Senate this week.

Now, we need your help to encourage House Leadership to concur with the changes in HB 239 and approve the bill! As budget negotiations begin between the House and the Senate leaders, many bills fall through the cracks. Please send a message to House Leadership that it is important that HB 239 does not this session.  Below is a list of members of House Leadership, who will decide the future of the bill. Please give them a call at 1-800-372-7181 and ask them to concur with the Senate changes to HB 239. Your phone calls are very important to the process. Also, feel free to contact your representative and share the business community’s support for HB 239.

Rep. Greg Stumbo, Speaker of the House

Rep. Larry Clark, Speaker Pro Tempore
Rep. Rocky Adkins, Majority Floor Leader
Rep. Robert Damron, Majority Caucus Chairman
Rep. John Will Stacy, Majority Whip
